Monday. My boy started pre-school today. sigh

Yesterday played in One Hit Wonders- a Houses of the Blooded game ran by cochese . Lots of fine folks in attendance. The game...well, let's just say we gave up on John Wick's ability to write clear prose or instructions, the lack of tables and references, and the fairly convoluted rulebook (not to mention the typos!). We agreed, mostly, that we loved the setting. The rules had possibilities, but the rulebook was impossible!
Things did get moving a bit after we got the gist of the rules, but we kept finding situations that snagged us. If we hadn't been playtesting the rules for use at ACNW for the Grindhouse game, we probably would have just defaulted to our expectations and pressed on, but alas. Needless to say none of this had anything to do withcochese , and a lot to do with the game itself.
My biggest complaint (and I've had this for a few other story-games) is that the mechanics and narrative control elements get in the way of roleplaying, which I really enjoy more than "director-style" cooperative story-telling. oh well. It was still fun to try and to get together with everyone.

Spent the day driving to and from the Airport and my folks' place as official chauffeur. They went to Peru. I want to go somewhere. Is it sad that my folks are having more fun than I am? Top 5 places I would go because I've always wanted to and have never been:

Corsica
Romania
Egypt
Australia
Canada: Quebec/Montreal (heck needed a fall back spot)

Just returned from camping. Made a stop off at Powell's as we swung through Portland. Got out of there only spending 100 dollars, some of which was for my daughter. Have been in a particularly sci-fi mood lately- bought books by various "new space opera" authors: Alastair Reynolds, Iain Banks, Sean Williams, etc. I love the "recent" return to the Big Ideas, Sense of Wonder, Astounding thrills every page sci-fi. Though my literary side gets into the "new wave", "slipstream", and "social" science fiction genres, I quickly grew tired of sci-fi that lacked the oomph that drew me to it.

As is the case, this wave of sci-fi leads me to lament never being able to run a BIG sci-fi game. The only sf rpgs I've ever managed to run as "campaigns" have been star wars and military s-f based. I would LOVE to run a space opera campaign. Natch, that's why I'm running an SF scenario at ACNW. But the BIG one would be a campaign with all the time-consuming features like a Blog, Web page, and email games that interweave around a regular F2F game....this would be my Masterpiece of GMing...ah such grandiose thoughts....

Hey! You! and Stuff

Well I got my ACNW games in. Where are yours? We need cool games. Running 1 Amber-esque game at the end of the universe. Running a Sci-Fi (not SYFY dammit) game, too. Looking forward to designing and running both of them.

Also coming up, Fall Quarter. Where, in my desire to teach less I have gotten the assignment of teaching Spelling Improvement. Yes, I work at a College. Not sure what to say or  do. I mean, it's spelling. Read, remember, spell. It has a textbook that tries to identify the various Spelling rules in english. There is an "i before e except after c except when sounding like "a" like in neighbor and weigh" chapter. Luckily, it is only 3 credits, which means only 3 HOURS A WEEK! Lots of quizzes and in class work, I guess. Sigh. Plus i have the ever popular Freshman Composition. The new textbook is nice, however "The World is a Text". I could have written it- it contains a lot of stuff I have incorporated into my classes anyway. I might actually use the "standard" textbook this quarter.

ACNW

Okay, games are due tomorrow. Have to figure this out. two games or three? amber or non-amber? I love deadlines!

Dinner is cooking, smells great. Scalloped potatoes! With CHEESE! For those who know, this is a blessing. My wife recently decided her dairy allergy had faded. I made real lasagna a week or two ago. Now she's making scalloped potates. Next: Fondue!!!

Hey LJ I'm still standing..err sitting at my computer

Has it really been since Feb. since I last posted on LJ. I don't think I am cut out for this thing. Oh Well, giving it a try again.
The impetus: ACNW is coming up again! And I only have 2 days to beat the deadline to submit games! my how time flies.
First, am running half of Grindhouse 3 with cochese . Game: 2027 After the Nukes Fell. And yes, I love Cherry 2000 so be warned.
Then, I think I am running at least one other game. One I have had in my head for a while, not sure if I am up for it, but hey, that's what the next 2 months are for: Amber in the far future, immortal elders compete with each other to DESTROY THE UNIVERSE. Each player has a special destruction agenda and "recipe". meet all your goals and destroy the whole universe! Thoughts? Anyone want to assist?

May have one other one in me.

Other than that life is OK. teaching night classes fall quarter. nothing to write home about. Have about 3 short stories in various production stages. Some poems, will soon have a "collection" of poems that I might send around to try and get published. Summer is hard on my writing, with the kids home, schedules changing, vacations, etc. Hopefully Fall will settle things into a routine again.

Maybe more on my gaming sitch later.

Stuff and more stuff, sickness and writing

Stayed home sick from work today and felt bad. The quarter is almost over and they have a paper due next week, but my stomach was killing me and I couldn't keep my breakfast down (granola bar chunks), so I turned around at Nisqually and drove back home and called it in.
Slept till like 2, sweating and shivering under the covers at the same time, great. Seems to be almost all gone now though, so...24 hr bug?
Have gotten a bunch of gaming stuff down this afternoon and reread a couple of drafts of stories, though didn't really "write" much. I think my Gardener and the Emperor short is ready to send off to a paying market. So I guess that was accomplished.

Am stuck on a story "The Eyeball Merchant finds love". Can't find my POV.
Have a few anthologies I would like to send off to with deadlines fast approaching....

Have the kids tomorrow so I doubt I will get much done on the non-domestic front.
One thing I am struggling with, especially since ending my sabbatical, is being split over so many different things. I have a hard time with Time-Management- my personal preference is to stay focused on a task for hours and hours, losing myself in it. Unfortunately, I am scattered and interrupted far too frequently for that to happen.
OK, enough bitching.

Midterms and Movies

Am giving midterms this week. yeah. That's pretty much it. Have papers to grade, most are done. Spent the weekend goofing off. Played in a Star Wars game at cochese 's run by scarywhitegirl .

The game had potential, but we only had 3 players (and two of us made pretty joke characters- a Wookie Diplomat and his protocol droid) so the game never really got off the ground. I think we just kibbitzed and joked too much. On the flip side I really enjoyed hanging out and geektalkin', so I had fun but felt a little bad about it.

Let's see. Took my daughter to see Coraline. Short review: great visuals, charming story. But what I was most proud of are the times my daughter leaned over and said: "They changed that from the book".  Then, afterwards she helped to point out that many of the changes downplayed the heroine...the boy character saves her at the end, the cat helps her get one of the prizes, and she doesn't really outsmart her opponents or trick them so much as get lucky. One of the reasons we liked the book was the strong girl protagonist and the movie chipped away at that. oh well. At least I have my own cool daughter who notices those things.

Wife's birthday today, had a fine dinner last night in honor, and she spent the afternoon at home with me and we did lunch, too. Have to fill up her new mp3 player with music for her forays to the gym. gonna fill it with bad 80s aerobic music heh heh heh.

Vaguely trying to figure out my plan for work tomorrow...The sabbatical has really soured me on my current job. I did not return renewed with energy and commitment, I returned only begrudgingly due to an economic slump. would rather be writing full time (if I thought the house could sell in this market, I would be pushing to move into something cheaper to save money). On that note, need to send out several stories to paying markets. Have also written a few poems lately. My muse is fickle, elusive, and shy. She runs from the noisy children who have taken over my household...need to find a secluded space...

Updates

Well we're three weeks into Winter Quarter. I have gone back to teaching. Part time only though (only 1 class this quarter). So hopefully I can get some more writing done.
also, I have gotten on "the facebook" after insistence from an old High School friend I bumped into at the WA state history museum in Tacoma. A great surprise while taking Gabe to look at the Model Train exhibit. Bigger surprise--the friend has lived in Olympia for the last 3 years!!!!. So pretty cool coincidence.

Let's see. Got to play in a cool game of Wilderness of Mirrors atcochese 's and our next one hit wonder will be Star Wars! If memory serves I have volunteered to play a protocol droid in service to cochese's Wookie diplomat! Should be a hoot.

Made a killer taco salad tonight.
That is all
